This is a time when a child is maturing physically, cognitively, and emotionally. Social and emotional development during middle childhood is changing rapidly at this time in a child’s life. It is also changing the relationships they are having with family members and peers. They are making gains in recognizing the emotions of others around them as well as recognizing their own emotions. During this stage of development, children are learning to control their emotions and communicate them effectively both physically and verbally. This makes a big impact on how a child will interact with others around them and understand the emotions of other people. Having an understanding of how others feel will allow a better view of why others are acting in a certain way and help an individual establish an understanding of their own identity. I think this is one of the most important components of development because it will affect their ability to form healthy relationships throughout life. A child will make friends and have stronger and more meaningful relationships if they are in control of their emotions and know how to communicate their emotions in an appropriate way. When a child matures socially and emotionally they are losing the all about me type of behavior. They are more aware of the feelings of others and begin to process and understand other people’s emotions as well. Without growth socially and emotionally, it will be very hard for the child to play organized sports, share, and play cooperatively.
