Weekend Availability

Class,

Thank you for another great week in our online classroom!  I am so happy to see so much information being shared.  I really enjoy watching students become actively engaged in the courses that I teach.  Your hard work is a constant reminder of why I teach!  Thank you for your dedication.

I will be at home most of the weekend watching the Royals and enjoying the great weather.  The Royals playing in the World Series is a dream come true for our family.  My entire weekend will be revolving around Games 3, 4 and 5.

I will check email twice over the weekend. I will also have my phone with me.  Feel free to call or send a text message if you have a quick assignment question (no gradebook questions, please).  913-488-2995  If you send a text message, please give me plenty of detail including your course and your name.   Please note that I am an "early bird".  I am always willing to field questions but I strongly prefer that they are addressed before 9:00pm CST.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Fundamentals of Speech!

Welcome to Fundamentals of Speech!  First, during the week I want you to become familiar with the layout of this class.  Typically our weeks will run Monday to Sunday.  This week will run Monday to Sunday, June 8th.  I want everyone to get acclimated to the course and make arrangements to complete the speeches that are required throughout the course. It is expected that you are fully aware of the speech expectations and able to submit them on time.  Read the information provided within the course and watch the Introduction Screencast provided in Unit 1.  From there you will complete the Course Understand Quiz, as well as the Introduction discussion.

Another important point that I need to make immediately is that plagiarism will not be tolerated.  This tends to be an issue when giving speeches and completing the essay assignments.  We will discuss APA and source citation briefly but it is expected that all work submitted is accompanied by a reference page.  You will thank me for this later in your collegiate career, I promise.

While reading the syllabus please note the strict due date policies for the speeches that exist.  I do not want anyone to receive a bad grade or get dropped from the course because of a missed due date.

Finally, please post in the forum named "Introductions."  I want to know who you are and what your goals are not only for this class but also for your life.

Here's to a great course!

Important Speech Information - Please Read Carefully

Class,
We will begin working on our first speech outline in Unit 2.  You will submit your Introduction Speech in Unit 3.  Below is some general information regarding the speeches.  I want to make sure that everyone understands the process before we get started.

In order to save you money and time I am requesting that students record their speeches via a digital recorder.  Most digital cameras and smart phones have a recording option.  Once you have recorded your speech I would like for you to upload it to YouTube.com.  I have had issues with students password protecting your speeches.  Please leave them open and you can delete it after I grade it.  You must submit the link to the YouTube.com speech along with your outline and references.  The Introduction speech does not require references but the other speeches do require references.

If you are not familiar with the process of uploading to YouTube, please take a look at this video.  I find that YouTube is the best way for me to view your speeches.  Please make your videos Public.  You can delete it when I get done grading.  I tend to have issues view speeches that are set to Private.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O7iUiftbKU

You must show me ten audience members over the age of 10 (babies and toddlers do not count).  Simply pan the camera around before, during, or after the speech so that I may view the audience.  Failure to show me your ten audience members will lead to a  10 point (10%) deduction on your speech.  Simply put - you cannot receive an A on a speech if you have less than 10 audience members.

You must turn in a full-content outline with your speeches.  We will work on outlines in the unit prior to the unit that the speech is due.  For example we will complete the Introduction Speech Outline in Unit 2 (worth 30 points) for the speech that is due in Unit 3.   I will provide you with a sample outline to complete for each speech.   I will review your outline on Monday of Unit 3.  You must submit your complete speech outline to me with your speech link submission.

You will submit your YouTube link and outline to the assignment link titled Unit 3 - Introduction Speech.   When you are ready to submit your speech, provide me with your YouTube link to your speech in the Comment box.  Attach your speech final outline below the comment box.  Check the gradebook for your score and my comments.

Thank you!
Lacey Finley

APA Formatting

I find that students frequently have issues with correct APA citations. The very best site to use is https://penmypaper.com/blog/an-apa-format-example-shows-ways-to-compose-a-research-paper/.  Through this link you can get all the information about APA citation.  It is the most wonderful website on the planet!
